Fisheries have peaked. We need to farm seafood to feed 10 billion people, and because of this, already more than half of the global seafood production comes from aquaculture. As demand for healthy and sustainable seafood grows, collaboration across the value chain is helping to increase the supply of farm-raised fish and shrimp, aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal #17 (Partnership). Sustainable feed lies at the heart of this challenge, and until now, the main source of Omega-3s in feed has been wild-caught fish.
Veramaris is leading the way with its innovative algae oil, rich in Omega-3 (EPA & DHA). The adoption of algae oil as a feed ingredient supports the growing supply for seafood from aquaculture without increasing the pressure on wild-caught fish for feed. By partnering with stakeholders across the entire value chain, Veramaris supports the development of aquaculture as a healthy and sustainable food system while respecting planetary boundaries. This documentary showcases a successful partnership example within the farmed shrimp value chain.
Through its partnership with Skretting, a leading feed producer, Veramaris has enhanced the nutritional value of shrimp feed formulations in Ecuador. By incorporating alternative ingredients, Skretting not only boosts the feed’s nutritional profile but also avoids increasing pressure on ocean resources.
Santa Priscila, has embraced these innovative feeds, using them to raise healthier shrimp with better welfare and a reduced marine footprint, thereby setting a new standard in shrimp aquaculture. As the largest shrimp farmer in Ecuador, Santa Priscila is committed to environmental stewardship, including mangrove conservation, support for local communities and scholarships, and a commitment to renewable energy on its farms.
Pacific Coral Seafood plays a critical role in distributing these sustainable products, serving high-quality retailers and food service operators in the US. Its proactive approach to sustainability emphasizes the importance of healthy products that support consumer demand and benefit the environment.
Together, these partners demonstrate the power of collaboration as a force for good and as a way to solve complex problems that no single stakeholder can solve in isolation. This collective effort strengthens the seafood supply chain and sets a positive example for the industry’s future.
The video, featuring Veramaris, Skretting, Santa Priscila, and Pacific Coral Seafood, demonstrates how collaboration works within Ecuador’s shrimp industry. Chef and Culinary Educator Chris Rieloff, meanwhile, discusses the importance of balancing taste, texture, and flavor with nutritional value and sustainability. Healthy shrimp, fed with optimal levels of Omega-3 EPA & DHA, powered by algae, meet these requirements.
