The ocean has always been at the heart of how the world moves — providing food and carrying the energy and goods that build communities and sustain billions of lives. Yet as global energy demand continues to rise, driven by a world population expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, the maritime industry faces one of its defining challenges: how to keep global trade moving and growing, while reducing the environmental impact of doing so.
BGN, one of the world’s leading independent energy and commodities groups, answers that call by embedding sustainability into every layer of its operations and long-term vision. With a foundation built on more than eight decades of experience, BGN handles over 65 million metric tons of energy and commodities each year and operates across 120 countries, from around 20 locations worldwide. It connects producers with global markets through its strategic trading hubs in Geneva, Dubai, Houston and Singapore.
Central to its business is BGN’s global shipping and logistics operations. As a market leader in liquified petroleum gas (LPG) with around 10% of global LPG trade, BGN has one of the largest LPG shipping fleets in the sector. Sustainability and environmental protection are at the core of the company’s growing shipping and logistics operations.
In 2021, BGN’s Group CEO, Rüya Bayegan, established the first strategic partnership with Al Seer Marine to construct dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) capable of operating on traditional and cleaner fuel alternatives, and able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30%. In addition, the company operates in full compliance with international maritime regulations, including the IMO 2030 decarbonization goals.
BGN has expanded its shipping and logistics capabilities through collaborations with leading international maritime players, including HMM, South Korea, Al Seer Marine, UAE and Pertamina International Shipping, Indonesia. These partnerships have enabled BGN to accelerate its fleet expansion while combining operational excellence with technological innovation to reduce its environmental footprint.
In late 2025, three new state-of-the art dual-fuel VLGCs — Merak, Megrez and Mizar — were delivered under BGN’s joint venture with Al Seer Marine. Already in 2026, BGN has signed strategic agreements with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea for the construction of four additional 90k cbm dual-fuel LPG VLGCs, and with Greek shipping company Capital Clean Energy Carriers for BGN’s first LNG vessel, the Amore Mio I. These partnerships demonstrate BGN’s determination to not only grow its shipping and logistics operations sustainably, but also its long-term commitment to investing in cleaner fuels essential for the energy transition.
As Group CEO of one of the world’s leading energy and commodity trading companies, Rüya Bayegan believes that while providing the energy the world needs to grow and transition to a low carbon future, BGN must also protect the oceans on which global trade depends — for future generations to come.
