HIMA SEAFOOD
Hima Seafood is a Norwegian company that runs a land-based fish farm in Rjukan. The company specializes in trout farming, which is a nutritious fish that grows quickly and thrives in freshwater. By using technology that recirculates pure, clean mountain water, HIMA Seafood offers high-quality products.
Hima Seafood is establishing the world’s largest land-based trout farm in Rjukan, Norway. Land-based fish-farming that recirculates pure, clean mountain water is an environmentally friendly way of farming trout – a nutritious fish that grows quickly and thrives in freshwater. The RAS technology used by HIMA secures stable conditions and optimal water quality to ensure excellent fish health. And waste from the fish farming is transformed into a vital resource: highly demanded organic fertilizer.
Hima Seafood is pioneering sustainable practices in land-based aquaculture. Recognizing the urgent need for change in the seafood industry and global agricultural practices, we’re utilizing state-of-the-art technology from our business ally EYVI. EYVI is a pioneer in recirculating aquaculture systems, led by a team with many years of industry experience. Our common goal is to deliver premium trout and the highest quality organic fertilizer while minimizing our environmental footprint.
HIMA’s commitment to sustainability is three-fold:
Sustainable fish farming practices
Employing advanced Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), we provide our trout with a pure and pristine habitat, ensuring their optimal growth and well-being. This innovative technology empowers us to sustain an extraordinarily low rate of water consumption. Remarkably, it recycles 98% of all water utilized, ensuring maximum efficiency and sustainability. This allows us to maintain a low carbon footprint. The full automation of our operations, courtesy of our process supplier EYVI, offers increased efficiency and control over every stage of the fish’s life cycle, from egg to harvest. This enables us to monitor and ensure optimal fish health closely.
By maintaining a consistent habitat for the fish throughout its entire life cycle, HIMA Seafood has successfully eliminated the need for inter-facility transportation. This crucial step reduces undue stress for the fish and fosters their overall wellbeing and health. The approach illustrates the distinctive advantages of land-based fish farming by setting a new standard in aquaculture practices.
Organic fertilizer production
We maintain full control over the biological process of our operations, which allows us to ensure zero feed waste. Furthermore, the waste generated from our fish farming operations is transformed into a vital resource. For every kilogram of premium trout, we produce 0.5 kg of organic fertilizer as a beneficial side product. This crucial output plays a significant role in addressing the global organic fertilizer shortage, where demand outstrips supply by 70-80%. Not only does this further our commitment to sustainability, but it also reinforces the circular nature of our business model.
The spillover of surplus fertilizer into rivers and their outlets is a major threat to marine life, promoting the proliferation of harmful algae. Organic fertilizer, such as the side product produced by HIMA Seafood, offers a sustainable solution to this challenge. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, organic options have a natural ability to bind with the soil, minimizing nutrient leakage into rivers and ultimately the ocean.
Expansion and Global Food Security
We’re excited to bring our innovative and sustainable farming practices to more regions, starting with our first facility in the United States. This expansion will help to mitigate the issues associated with sea-based fish farming and contribute to global food security. It’s important to note that our land-based fish farming model can be implemented anywhere, not only in fjord-rich regions like Norway. Significantly, the RAS technology is mature and globally viable. It stands ready for deployment across the globe, designed to accommodate growth and adapt to varying production capacities.
HIMA Seafood is deeply committed to protecting our oceans from plastic pollution, reducing greenhouse emissions, and promoting organic farming. With over 100 million pounds of plastic polluting our oceans annually, largely due to industrial fishing gear, and agricultural emissions expected to rise by at least 30% by 2025, our mission is more important than ever. Our operations are a testament to sustainable aquaculture, contributing not only to food security but also to a healthier planet.
Our efforts are backed by forward-thinking investors like the Foresight Group. An esteemed global investment firm, Foresight Group specializes in private equity and infrastructure, with a strong commitment to sustainable development. They share our aspiration for a sustainable future in food production. We take great pride in this partnership, which we believe underlines our mutual dedication to sustainability.
